Buffys 2026

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards!

About the Buffys

Each year, the Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (the Buffys) brings the community together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of local artists. The event showcases the artists, organisations, and cultural leaders shaping arts and culture across Wood Buffalo through a dynamic evening of performances, presentations, and celebration.

By recognising and elevating local talent, the Buffys helps artists strengthen their portfolios, expand professional networks, and open doors to new opportunities locally, across Alberta, and beyond.

The 2026 Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Keyano Theatre, welcoming the entire community to celebrate artistic excellence in Wood Buffalo.

This year’s theme, Electric Midnight, draws inspiration from the bold energy of 1970s music culture, including glam rock, neon nightlife, and the electric atmosphere of the stage. With vibrant visuals and a dramatic after-dark aesthetic, the evening will celebrate the artists, groups, and arts organisations whose work brings creativity and excitement to life across Wood Buffalo.

Nominations are now open, inviting community members to recognise the artists, groups, and arts organisations making meaningful contributions to Wood Buffalo’s vibrant cultural landscape.

Accomodations

Arts Council Wood Buffalo is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and to offering programs that are accessible and barrier-free. While the nominations process reflects practices used across the wider arts community, we recognise that it may feel challenging for some participants.

Artists who need support are encouraged to reach out. Arts Council staff can review nominations prior to submission and do not take part in the adjudication process.

To honour oral traditions, artists may choose to submit their nomination as a recorded audio file. Audio submissions are shared with adjudicators in their original recorded form and are available to all artists who prefer to submit orally.

For support with this or any part of the nominations process, contact the Programs Team at programs@artscouncilwb.ca or 587-674-1625.

Adjudication

Peer evaluation is fundamental to Arts Council Wood Buffalo's decision-making process. All entries are adjudicated by a province-wide adjudicating committee.

Entries in all categories will be scored by no less than three (3) adjudicators, representing the diverse artistic disciplines that make up the Buffys Award Categories.

The top three scores (by average) in each category will comprise the shortlist. The top scoring entry in each category will be the award recipient. Scoring will be based on the rubric as outlined in the Buffys Handbook.

Award recipients will be announced live at the Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards Gala.
