ABOUT THE PROJECT
Arts Council Wood Buffalo, on behalf of Imperial Oil, is seeking submissions from Indigenous artists for the procurement of seven existing artworks that reflect the creativity, culture, and identity of our communities. Selected artworks will be displayed in their original form AND digitally transformed into a permanent mural installation(s) at the Kearl worksite. The mural(s) will be created in consultation with the selected artists to ensure cultural protocols and stories are honoured in the final design.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
This call is open to Indigenous artists, with priority given to procuring one artwork from artists representing each of the following Nations/Groups:
- Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation
- Mikisew Cree First Nation
- Fort McMurray 468 First Nation
- Fort McKay First Nation
- Fort McKay Métis Nation
- Fort Chipewyan Métis
- Fort McMurray Métis
We are particularly interested in applications from Indigenous artists residing in the Wood Buffalo region.
WORK MEDIA
Artwork may be in any two- or three-dimensional media, suitable for framing and installation on a wall or panel. No specific theme required – preference given to work that:
- Celebrates Indigenous culture
- Reflects the landscape, traditions, or people of Wood Buffalo
FEES
- Artists will be paid fair market value for the physical artwork AND the licensing for the mural installation
- Artists retain copyright
- Imperial Oil receives ownership of the physical artwork (non-exclusive rights only)
- Licensing fees will be paid for any future use of the artwork (as per CARFAC)
APPLICATION
Applications are accepted via email to jenna@artscouncilwb.ca. Please include the following information in your email:
- Artist name and community affiliation
- Title, medium, size, and year of artwork
- Price of artwork
- Up to 3 high-quality images
- Short artist statement (max 250 words)
SUBMISSION DEADLINE
Submissions must be submitted by July 21, 2025 at 11:59pm. Late submissions will not be considered for hire.
Please note that only artists(s) who are successful will be notified.
Selections will be made by a committee of project stakeholders. All selections made will be final. All successful applicants will be notified by September 1, 2025.
