Buffys 2023 – Call for Artistic Director

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (Buffys) is an annual program that recognizes and celebrates excellence in various areas of the arts throughout our region. The program also builds awareness of the incredible contribution artists make to Wood Buffalo. This year’s showcase will be delivered in-person, allowing attendees ticketed-entry to the event. Arts Council will also professionally record the event for archival purposes — this will be made available to watch for free from home after the event is complete.

Arts Council aims to hire an Artistic Director to help bring this year’s event to life. This candidate will artistically direct two hosts (pre-selected and recruited by Arts Council) who will help emcee the event (introducing award announcers, performing artists, important delegates, etc.) in line with this year’s theme: Midnight at the Moulin Rouge. The Artistic Director is also responsible for working closely with the Set Designer to create a space for the Buffys that supports the Buffys narrative, and seamlessly weaves all performance and awards announcement elements together. The Artistic Director may choose whether to use improvisational techniques or to create their own scripted material to support the creation of their work.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Artists must be Wood Buffalo residents for the duration of the project
  • Artists must have demonstrable experience directing performing artists

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • Arts Council is particularly interested in unique work, and preference will be given to engaging proposals from artists who have not already participated in the Buffys. The Buffys are a great place to be experimental and try things out, so we encourage artists to embrace their unique ideas and dream something up that fits “outside-the-box”.
  • The performance will be presented in front of a live audience and recorded for viewers to watch later at home, with support from professional videographers commissioned and compensated by ACWB. The Artistic Director will realize their vision by collaborating with others, including videographers, project managers, set designers and performers.
  • The Director will work with a Set Designer and Arts Council Programs Manager to collaborate on the vision for the stage design that will support this year’s event.
  • All final submissions must be 100% original, royalty-free and free from risk of being flagged for copyright violations.

ASA Call for Submissions: “Home and Migration”

The Alberta Society of Artists invites Alberta artists (18 years of age or older) to submit to the exhibition “Home and Migration”.

“Artists are asked to think about location, place, and where home is. Is the idea of ‘home’ a physical place, an emotional place, or both? ‘Home’ may connect to nostalgia, one’s formative years, or to a settled place of ‘now’. How has the feeling of home changed with migration and with the diaspora of a community?”

The artist’s statement will be crucial to the understanding of the artwork’s intent in this exhibition call. A
catalogue may be produced (note that the catalogue may be virtual or/and actual.) Media range is open. Two-dimensional with a size limitation of 40″ in any direction. Exhibition location is the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton: June-August 2023. There may be other venues.

Deadline for Submissions: April 3, 2023 @ 11:59 PM MDT

For more information, go to https://www.albertasocietyofartists.com/call-for-submissions-home-migration/, email [email protected], or call the Gallery at 403-265-0012.

Call for Submissions – Found Festival 2023

Edmonton’s celebration of place and space is seeking site-specific installation and performance works! Found Festival 2023 (July 6-9) will be activating public spaces throughout Old Strathcona and beyond for four days of exciting, interactive, and innovative arts.

We take art out of conventional venues directly into the community. Found Festival celebrates art of all kinds: theatre, dance, film, poetry, music, sound art, installation art, endurance art… if it’s art created for unconventional spaces that challenges the artist/audience relationship, there’s a home for it in Found Festival.

Projects may be of any discipline: Theatre, poetry, music, dance, visual arts, literary, or all of the above!

All projects are encouraged to apply, however the following are being prioritized for curation in 2023:

  • Interactive installation projects;
  • Theatre projects with existing development/workshopping/production history; and
  • Video/digital projects.

Projects that consider community impact, integrate use of found space and/or are informed by their desired locations, and consider the performer relationship to audience are ideal fits for Found Festival. You don’t need to know an exact location, collaborators, or production logistics yet – we will help selected projects get connected to spaces and resources to pull their ideas off!

Selected projects will receive an artist fee (typically ranging between $1,000-$4,000), production support, mentorship, and Festival infrastructure support (marketing, box office, etc). Selected artists who are eligible will receive hands-on support in submitting applications for the March 1 Edmonton Arts Council project grant deadline.

Apply by written submission, live pitch, or video by February 13, 2023.
