Early Career Banff Artist in Residence – Summer 2025

Overview

 

Early Career Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) Summer 2025 is an immersive program of studio practice, creative exploration, critical feedback, and mentorship for visual artists and curators in the early stages of their careers.

 

Open to visual artists and curators working in all visual arts mediums, this program combines the artistic freedom of a self-directed residency with the benefits of technical and faculty support. As well as having the space to create, research, and experiment, participants are part of a community of emerging artists committed to developing and expanding their practice.

 

Description

 

Participants in this residency will be supported with:

  • lectures.
  • workshops.
  • feedback from experienced faculty members who will be available for both group and one-on-one consultations.

 

Artists are provided with a studio, as well as targeted access to our extensive facilities. This includes:

  • access to personal studio spaces equipped for creative work, available 24/7, providing a dedicated environment for artistic expression.
  • targeted access to shared production facilities and knowledgeable staff who are available to provide technical assistance and support.

 

Requirements

 

This residency is for individual artists and collaborative groups (of no more than two) who have

  • completed formal training in visual arts at the post-secondary level, or
  • equivalent experience and recognition from their peers acquired through traditional knowledge and practices.

 

The program is designed to cater to visual artists at the early stage of their artistic careers, providing them with tailored opportunities for professional development and creative growth, including:

  • ceramicists.
  • curators.
  • painters.
  • paper artists.
  • photographers.
  • print-makers.
  • sculptors.

 

Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The program suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works.

 

Priority will be given to artists who have completed relevant training within five years and who have not previously attended a Visual Arts residency at Banff Centre.

 

Eligibility

 

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date.

Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Visa Eligibility Information:

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

Call for Artists – 2024 Annual Report Cover Artwork

Project Description

 

Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) is looking for local 2D or 3D artists, including but not limited to illustrators, photographers, graphic designers, printmakers or painters to submit artwork for their 2024 Annual Report cover. The image will reflect the theme: Reimagine

 

The image to be used on the cover of the Annual Report will be distributed during our AGM and other events. It will also be available to ALL members, stakeholders and general community members. The image will also be used to promote the Annual Report on ACWB’s various online platforms.

 

About the Theme

 

The theme for Arts Council Wood Buffalo’s 2024 Annual Report is Reimagine. This theme reflects ACWB’s commitment to envisioning new possibilities and approaches in supporting the arts and fostering a vibrant creative landscape across Wood Buffalo. By reimagining what the community and its creative ecosystem can achieve, ACWB inspires innovative pathways for collaboration, growth, and resilience.

 

Through initiatives like Arts INC, ACWB is working to reimagine the potential of downtown Fort McMurray as a hub for artistic engagement, economic vitality, and social connection. We believe that this campus will ignite a fresh wave of inspiration and reinvention within the community, creating a ripple effect that touches all aspects of life in Wood Buffalo.

Work Media

 

ACWB welcomes submissions from both established and emerging artists.

 

ACWB will not be purchasing the physical artwork, only the digital image. The artwork will be used as a background image, and under the discretion of ACWB’s designer, creating the final Annual Report graphic design, which may be cropped or have information and design elements placed on top. We will request non-exclusive rights to the work and will accept existing and new artwork; however, it should not have appeared in any other way in the Wood Buffalo community in the six months prior to submission.

 

Submitted digital files of photography, digital artwork or representations of any 2D or 3D artwork must be in the form of digital files, prepared and ready for print with the following requirements:

  • Digital artwork files must be uploaded in a jpg or png file format.
  • File size is no smaller than 8.5″ x 11″ and should be a minimum 300dpi. The image may be cropped to fit printable surface area. Please ensure the digital file is cropped to show only your submitted image and no background elements (frame, etc.).
  • All artworks and elements within the artwork must be the sole intellectual property of the artist. If the artwork is digital media medium, design elements must have been purchased with the proper license to be used for both print and digital purposes, listed in the project description.

Maximum of 3 artwork submissions per artist.

  • Artist Bio (100 words maximum)
  • Image list from A – C, title of artwork, medium used. Example: A) Title, Medium, B) Title, Medium, C) Title, Medium.
  • Print ready digital file, minimum 1MB and/or 300dpi resolution. Files should be named as follows: first name_last name.a.jpeg, first name_last name.b.jpeg, etc. ACWB will accept large files from a downloadable source such as dropbox.com and FTP service.

Selection Process

 

Artwork will be selected by Arts Council Wood Buffalo staff. The selection is final and the successful artist will be notified by Wednesday, February 26, 2025. 

 

Please note that only the successful artist will be notified. Artists submitting their artwork keep full copyright of their images. Submissions that are not chosen will not be used in any way by ACWB or third party organizations, unless requested by ACWB in advance and approved by the artist.

 

 

Licensing Fee

 

The successful artist will be paid a one time, all-inclusive licensing fee of $200.00, inclusive of GST.

Call for Artists: YMM Digital Art Exhibit

The Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) is seeking artists to submit their work for the 2025 YMM Digital Art Exhibit, to be showcased on the airport’s prominent digital screens. This exciting opportunity invites artists to contribute their creativity and talent to enhance the airport experience for travellers to enjoy. YMM is looking for captivating artwork that is appropriate for all ages and demonstrates respect for all cultures and identities.

 

The theme of the exhibit is “The Art of Connection.” This theme explores how art fosters connections among people within the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region through the lens of travel. We invite artists to submit their solo projects that reflect personal experiences, and the bonds formed during journeys. Our aim is to showcase how art can bridge differences and promote shared understanding among individuals, celebrating the unique stories and connections that enrich our community.

 

Submission Guidelines

 

1. Medium: Artists are welcome to submit artwork in any medium suitable for digital display, including but not limited to digital art, photography, illustrations, paintings, and mixed media.

 

2. Content: Artwork must be suitable for all ages and free from explicit or offensive content. It should respect and celebrate diversity of cultures, traditions, and identities.

 

3. Technical Specifications: Digital artworks should be submitted in formats compatible with display on the airport’s digital screens. Specific technical requirements will be provided upon selection.

 

4. Submission Process: Artists should submit a brief proposal outlining their concept and vision for the artwork, along with samples of their previous work that demonstrate their artistic style and proficiency.  Please note: The exhibit will showcase from 5 to 10 digital photos of the artist’s work.

 

5. Deadline: Friday, January 3, 2025

 

Selection Process and Installation

 

A panel of experts from the Fort McMurray International Airport and the local arts community will review final submissions. Artworks will be selected based on artistic merit, alignment with theme, and appropriateness for display in a public space. Successful artists will be notified of their selection via email.

 

Upon selection, artists will work closely with the airport’s curatorial team to finalize the technical details and ensure optimal presentation of their artwork on the digital screens. The exhibition will be installed with care and attention to detail to create an engaging and visually stunning experience for airport visitors.

 

Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium and the Fort McMurray Airport Authority will host and execute an exhibition launch event on behalf of the artist.

Call for Artists: Artist in Residence & Suncor Indigenous Artist Program

ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

 

The Artist in Residence Program and Suncor Indigenous Artist Program follow the traditional residency model, in which professional artists spend time creating work inspired by the environment, culture and people of Wood Buffalo. Both resident artists mentor local artists, with the Suncor Indigenous Artist prioritizing Indigenous Peoples in the rural communities. Resident artists engage with the community through workshop opportunities and showcase their newly created work through a final event. In 2025, Residences will be 3-4 weeks in length, will not run at the same time, and will take place in Spring 2025 (March 17th-April7th) and Summer 2025 (June 16-July 11). Exact dates and residency durations to be determined by ACWB and selected artists.

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA  

  • Artist must reside in Canada, preference given to Alberta based artists
  • Artist must be 21 years of age or older
  • Artist must have at least 2 years of professional experience in their field.
  • Must be willing to travel to the Wood Buffalo Region 
  • Artists must identify as Indigenous to be considered for the Suncor Indigenous Artist Program

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAMS

  • Arts Council is particularly interested in artists that will engage the community
  • Arts Council is interested in artists who will mentor artists in this region
  • The Artists in Residence will be required to instruct a minimum of two workshops 
  • The Artists in Residence may be required to do an engagement session(s) with artists and community members
  • Artists will create new work that will be showcased at the end of the Residency 

 

ARTISTIC DISCIPLINES

Arts Council Wood Buffalo welcomes any and all artforms. These artforms can include (but are not limited to): craft, dance, literary arts, media, music, performing arts, visual arts. 

 

SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL

All submissions must be submitted through our online Opportunities Portal. Create an account, login and then click on the purple “Start Entry” button. You may begin drafting your proposal by selecting “2025 Artist in Residence Programs” as your category. Shortlisted Artists will be invited to present their proposals to ACWB staff..

FEES
Each residency will be given a total allocation of $8,000, payable to the artist upon signing a contract with Arts Council Wood Buffalo. This sum is intended to cover expenses for travel, accommodations, materials, supplies, and artist fees. The artist is responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodations, though Arts Council Wood Buffalo staff can offer recommendations on best places to stay in the region. 

 

SELECTION PROCESS 

The artists will be selected on the appropriateness of the program to teach to community members of the Wood Buffalo region, the uniqueness of the program, and the cost and quality of the proposed workshops. Priority will be given to artists who have a strong workshop plan, showing detailed concepts and a focus on working with the community and mentoring artists in the Wood Buffalo Region.

 

Please note that only the artist(s) who are successful will be notified.

 

Selections will be made by Arts Council Wood Buffalo staff. All selections made will be final. All successful artists will be notified by November 15, 2024.

Call for Visual Artists: Wood Buffalo Sport Connection Multi-Award Banquet Awards Creation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Wood Buffalo Sport Connection is looking for local Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo creatives (2D or 3D visual artists, illustrators, photographers, graphic designers, printmakers or painters) to submit a proposal for their Multi-Sport Awards Banquet Award Creation Artist Call. The image will reflect the theme of Heart of a Champion.

 

The theme Heart of a Champion was chosen to celebrate the essence of sport and honour the remarkable achievements that stem from hard work and dedication. This theme goes beyond recognizing just the athletes; it pays tribute to coaches, officials, volunteers, sport builders, and the unsung heroes who contribute to the success of sports in our community. By focusing on the heart and soul of these individuals, we aim to highlight their relentless passion,
commitment, and the significant impact they have on fostering a vibrant and thriving sports culture. This celebration is a testament to their collective efforts and the inspirational stories that define the spirit of champions in every role.

 

Existing or new designs that capture the spirit of the theme will be used as awards to present to recipients in nine (9) categories, with a total of ten (10) awards being given out. All awards created by the selected artist will be the same or similar and will have the name of the recipient, the award category, and WBSC logo contained within the award. Artwork will be documented and used for promotional purposes including but not limited to social media, website, and
event program. The artist is responsible for the design, fabrication, and delivery of all ten awards.

 

 

WORK MEDIA (Visual Arts Call)

WBSC welcomes submissions from both established and emerging artists. WBSC will be purchasing the physical artwork which will be presented to awards recipients. Digital representations of the artwork may be used as a background image, and under the discretion of WBSC designer, may be cropped or have information and design elements placed on top for promotional purposes. WBSC requests non-exclusive rights to the work and will accept existing and new artwork; however, it should not have appeared in any other way in the Wood Buffalo community in the six months prior to submission or be used on a mass scale for up to six months after the annual report is released. The artist agrees that the image will not be used for other recognition programs or purposes without prior written approval from Wood Buffalo Sport Connection.

 

All artworks and elements within the artwork must be the sole intellectual property of the artist. If the artwork is digital media medium, design elements must have been purchased with the proper license to be used for both print and digital purposes, listed in the project description.

CONCTRACT FEE

 

The successful artist will be paid a one-time, all-inclusive fee of $1500 inclusive of GST. The successful artist’s work will be purchased by Wood Buffalo Sport Connection and full ownership will be transferred to Wood Buffalo Sport Connection upon payment. The organization has exclusive rights to the use of the image and the artist retains all copyright to the work. Wood Buffalo Sport Connection will credit the artist as the author of the work whenever possible.

Seniors & the Arts: Call for Workshop Instructors

ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

The Arts in Action program provides opportunities for Seniors to engage in the arts through activity-based workshops. These one-off workshops will consist of one session 3-4 hours long where the instructor will help Seniors create and finish artwork in one session.

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA  

  • Artist must reside in the Wood Buffalo Region 
  • Artist must be able to turn their artform into a teachable workshop geared towards Seniors and Elders
  • Artist must be experienced in their artform and be able to provide samples of previous experience 
  • Must have a reasonable and affordable budget for their proposed workshop

 

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • Arts Council is particularly interested in workshops that will engage Seniors or Elders in their workshop, creating a experience that will impact Seniors or Elders lives
  • The instructor will be in charge of planning one 3-4 hour session.
  • The proposed workshop should support between 10-20 Seniors or Elder participants. Maximum numbers will be decided in consultation with the successful Instructor candidates. 
  • Arts Council will be inviting Artists to submit calls for workshops that will take place within September 2024- April 2025

 

WORK MEDIA

The work media must be teachable and engaging to Seniors or Elders. Teaching Artforms may include, but are not limited to:  

  • Painting
  • Drumming
  • Theatre 
  • Beading
  • Comedy
  • Dance
  • Watercolour
  • Drawing
  • Woodworking
  • Macrame 
  • Improv
  • Photography

 

SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL

RMWB: Art For Social Change

Could your art be a tool to create positive change for those facing barriers due to a lack of accessibility and inclusion?

 

The Art for Social Change project invites artists living across Canada to submit proposals for site-specific public art installations that creatively explore and interpret the theme of accessibility.

 

The call is open to any discipline, including but not limited to sculpture, interactive installations, performance art and digital media. Up to six projects will be selected, each with a budget of up to $10,000.

Keyano Theatre: Call for Community Production

Keyano Theatre is accepting applications of interest from local producers of theatre. There are two opportunities to provide a theatrical experience to Fort McMurray. November 6-10, 2024 and April 3-13, 2025. Size and complexity of the proposed production will have to be taken into consideration for the appropriate performance time. Submissions from both a formalized and informal group of passionate theatre artists will be welcome and considered.

Submissions will be accepted until July 22, 2024 and successful applicants will be informed prior to August 1, 2024. If no suitable proposal is received for an opportunity, it may go unfilled.

 

Keyano Theatre will provide support for submitted productions in the following ways:

  • Audition space
  • Rehearsal space on Tues, Wed, Fri, Sundays
  • Sept 24-Nov 5 for first timeframe
  • Feb 4-Apr 2 for second timeframe
  • Access to stock props, costumes and set pieces
  • Theatrical Equipment such as wireless microphones, projectors and similar house equipment
  • Ticketing services
  • Advice in creating any technical elements of the production
  • Assistance in marketing through our various means (social media, email, digital signage)

The submitting company will be responsible for:

  • All financial obligations related to the production including rights, materials and personnel
  • Full Artistic control of the production
  • Providing all sets, costumes, props and other materials required to mount the production. Note: Keyano Theatre will not complete any construction or modification of items including painting.
  • All casting, direction, design and management of the production.
  • Additional sponsorships and any related deliverables

Financial Considerations:

  • Time in Keyano Theatre will be at the lowest community rate
  • Labour for technicians and front of house staff will be at current labour rates
  • Surcharge and convenience fees will remain with Keyano Theatre
  • All ticket sales will be given to the production after removing rental and labour costs.
  • Rental fee will not exceed ticket sales.

What to Prepare:

  • A short, written summary of vision, cast, costume and set requirements
  • An approximate budget
  • A production schedule of major milestones
  • Breakdown of time required during the onstage portion of the production
  • Overview of technical elements required
  • Script of proposed performance
  • Summary of the team’s experience in participating in or creating community theatre
  • A meeting to expand on proposal and answer questions if short listed

Scoring Criteria:

  • Production has broad based appeal to Fort McMurray audiences and potential to expand Keyano Theatre audience
  • Likelihood of generating revenue or remaining cost neutral
  • Appropriate artistic/production team members for the production ready to commit to its success.
  • A well-considered schedule from auditions to final clean up.

Director of Rendering Visions, Ashley Laurenson, is seeking to commission new artworks or license existing pieces for the M’Guphynn Media documentary about the creation of Arts INC.

M’Guphynn Media is looking for talented artists to contribute in the following categories:

The Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (Buffys) is an annual program that recognizes and celebrates excellence in various areas of the arts throughout our region. The program also builds awareness of the incredible contribution artists make to Wood Buffalo. This year’s showcase will be delivered at Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre. Arts Council aims to hire performing artists to create performances that will be showcased live, in-person at this year’s Awards Showcase on October 19, 2024.

 

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • Arts Council Wood Buffalo is seeking talented and experienced individuals locally, nationally and internationally to serve as adjudicators for the 2024 Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards.
  • The adjudication process for the 2024 Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards will be conducted entirely online through our dedicated Opportunities Portal. From July 8th to July 29th, adjudicators will have the flexibility to review and evaluate submissions at their convenience. Adjudicators can access the portal at any time during this period to assess entries, provide feedback, and make their determinations. This virtual platform ensures a streamlined and accessible adjudication experience for all participants.

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 

  • Must have extensive knowledge and experience in the artistic discipline they are applying to adjudicate.
  • Individuals can apply to adjudicate multiple categories if proficient in more than one artistic discipline.

SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION

All applications must be completed through our online Opportunities Portal. Create an account, login and then click on the purple “Start Entry” button. You may begin drafting your applications by selecting “Buffys – Adjudicator” as your category. 

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Applications must be received by 12PM on June 24, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered for hire.

 

FEE

Artists will be paid $10.00 per application adjudicated.

 

SELECTIONS PROCESS
Artists will be selected based on appropriateness for the category. Priority will be given to artists who are thorough and clear in their application, including the provision of detailed and well-supported concepts and reasoning.

 

Please note that only artists(s) who are successful will be notified.

 

Selections will be made by the Arts Council Wood Buffalo staff. All selections will be final, and successful artists will be notified by June 28, 2024.

RMWB: Art for Social Change

Could your art be a tool to create positive change for those facing barriers due to a lack of accessibility and inclusion?

 

The Art for Social Change project invites artists living within Western Canada (i.e., British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) to submit proposals for site-specific public art installations that creatively explore and interpret the theme of Accessibility.

 

The call is open to any discipline, including but not limited to sculpture, interactive installations, performance art and digital media.

 

Up to six projects will be selected, each with a budget of up to $10,000.
