Join Suncor Indigenous Artist in Residence Alyssa Miller for a special showcase unveiling the work created during her residency. This event offers a chance to view Alyssa’s completed pieces and hear her speak about her creative process, the inspiration behind her work, and her experiences living and creating in the Wood Buffalo region. All are welcome to celebrate the culmination of her residency.
About Alyssa Miller
Alyssa Miller is a Métis artist born and raised in Hinton, Alberta. Specialising in porcupine quillwork, Alyssa works with porcupine quills and birch bark to create jewellery and accessories that are inspired by the natural beauty of the mountains and wildflowers of her home. Alyssa’s artistic journey began in 2015 when she first learned to work with quills and birch at a cultural festival in Whitehorse. Since then, she has honed her skills, expanded her practice, and taught workshops across Canada. Alyssa has participated as a sponsored artist at both the Adaka Festival and the Great Northern Arts Festival, while also collaborating with organisations such as Head Start and The Métis Nation of Alberta.
About the Program
Arts Council Wood Buffalo’s Artist in Residence Program and Suncor Indigenous Artist Program create space for emerging and established artists to spend time immersed in our region, creating work inspired by the environment, culture and people of Wood Buffalo.
Both Resident Artists mentor local artists, with the Suncor Indigenous Artist prioritising Indigenous Peoples in the rural communities. Each year, the Resident Artists engage with the community during their stay, through workshops, events, and other opportunities to connect. The residencies culminate in a final celebration and showcase of the Resident Artists’ newly created work.
These residencies are open to artists living in Canada and working in any discipline, with the specific activities tailored to suit the creative practices of the selected artists.
