Literary Individual Project Funding

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) Literary Individual Project Funding program provides grants of up to $18,000 to support Alberta writers, literary arts administrators, and literary artist ensembles undertaking a specific literary arts project. Funding support a range of activities, including writing and creation, research, marketing, professional development, and career advancement. Eligible projects may also include editing, translation, anthology development, and literary residencies.

Who Can Apply

This funding opportunity is open to Alberta-based:

  • Individual writers
  • Literary arts administrators
  • Literary artist ensembles

Applicants must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Person with an open work or study permit from within Canada.
  • Have had their primary residence in Alberta for at least one full year before applying.
  • Ordinarily live in Alberta for at least six months of each year.
  • Be in good standing with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction
  • Poetry
  • Drama
  • Children's and Young Adult Literature
  • Graphic Novels
  • Literary Translation
  • Anthologies

Funding

Applicants may request up to $18,000 to support eligible project expenses directly related to their proposed literary project. Funding may be used for expenses such as writer and editor fees, research, materials, promotion, travel, accommodations, tuition or training fees, and other eligible project-related costs. Grants may cover up to 100% of eligible expenses.

Application Deadline

  • September 1, 2026

Applications must be submitted through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts' Grant Administration Tracking and Evaluation (GATE) online system no later than 11:59 PM. (Mountain Time) on the application deadline date.
