About the Opportunity
The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) Indigenous Arts Individual Project Funding program provides grants of up to $18,000 to support Indigenous artists, arts administrators, and artist ensembles in Alberta. This program is designed to encourage the creation, development, preservation, and sharing of Indigenous arts, cultural practices, and creative expression while supporting artistic and professional growth.
Funding is available for a wide range of artistic and cultural projects, including the creation of new work, artistic research, community-based cultural initiatives, exhibitions, performances, marketing and audience development, and professional development opportunities such as workshops, mentorships, residencies, and specialized training. Projects may reflect traditional, contemporary, or interdisciplinary Indigenous artistic practices.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must:
- Identify as Indigenous
- Be an Alberta resident for at least one full year prior to the application deadline.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Person with an eligible work or study permit.
- Meet the Alberta Foundation for the Arts' eligibility requirements and be in good standing with the organization.
Individual artists, arts administrators, and Indigenous artist ensembles are encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects may also be eligible, provided all project co-owners meet the program requirements.
Funding
Applicants may request up to $18,000, covering up to 100% of eligible project expenses.
Eligible expenses may include:
- Artist and technician fees
- Production and presentation costs
- Marketing and promotional activities
- Research and project development
- Travel and accommodation
- Professional development and training
- Administrative expenses
- Other reasonable project-related costs, including the gathering of natural materials for artistic or cultural purposes where applicable
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted online through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts' Grant Administration Tracking and Evaluation (GATE) system.
Applications should include a project description, project budget, artistic résumé, support materials, and any additional documentation required by the program guidelines. Projects must not begin before an application has been submitted.
Application Deadlines
The Indigenous Arts Individual Project Funding program accepts applications twice each year.
