ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) invites Indigenous artists from across Canada to facilitate workshops and creative experiences through the Suncor Indigenous Artist Program, a series of workshops and events running from Fall 2026 to Summer 2027.
The program celebrates Indigenous art, culture, and creativity while creating opportunities for community members to engage in hands-on learning, cultural exchange, and artistic expression. ACWB is committed to supporting Indigenous artistic practices and providing meaningful opportunities for Indigenous artists to share their knowledge, stories, and skills with the community.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Â Â Â Â Â Open to artists within Canada
- Â Â Â Artist must identify as Indigenous (status or non-status)
- Â Â Â Artist must have prior experience working in the medium they propose to teach
- Â Â Â Artist must be able to turn their artform into a structured, teachable workshop
- Â Â Â Artist must be able to provide samples or documentation of previous work in their chosen medium
 ABOUT THE COMMISSION
- Selected artists will facilitate a workshop on a date to be determined in collaboration with ACWB Program staff between Fall 2026 to Summer 2027.
- ACWB will cover the full cost of materials and supplies for the workshop. The artist is responsible for purchasing materials for reimbursement, unless otherwise agreed upon.
- Teaching Artist fees will be determined based on the scope and format of the proposed workshop
- Workshop proposals should include an estimated participant capacity and any specific space or technical requirements
- ACWB staff will provide logistical and administrative support throughout the planning and delivery of the workshop
WORK MEDIA
Proposed workshops should be rooted in an Indigenous artform or craft tradition that the artist has direct experience in. Artforms may include, but are not limited to:
- Â Â Â Beading
- Â Â Â Leather work
- Â Â Â Sewing & Ribbon work
- Â Â Â Painting
- Â Â Â Drawing
- Â Â Â Carving
- Â Â Â Textile arts
- Â Â Â Traditional crafts
Artists are encouraged to propose a medium that is meaningful to their own practice and cultural background.
SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL
All submissions must be sent via email to Programs Coordinator Michelle Foran at michelle@artscouncilwb.ca with the subject line: Suncor Indigenous Artist Program.
Please include the following in your submission:
- Â Â A short description of your proposed workshop, including the artform, what participants will create, and any relevant cultural context
- Â Â A photo or documentation of your own work in the proposed medium
- Â Â A brief description of your prior teaching or facilitation experience
- Â Â An approximate budget for materials and supplies (ACWB will cover all approved material costs)
SUBMISSION DEADLINE
Submissions must be received by Friday, September 18, 2026 Â at 11:59PM.
SELECTION PROCESS
Artists will be selected based on the strength and clarity of their workshop proposal, their experience with the proposed medium, and their connection to the artform they wish to teach. Priority will be given to Indigenous artists who demonstrate a thoughtful approach to sharing their practice with others and a commitment to creating a welcoming and engaging experience for participants.
