The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity's Leighton Artist Studio - Photography 27/28 offers photographers 2 to 6 weeks of self-directed creative time in the private Crich Photography Studio.
The residency supports independent projects in black and white analogue photography, digital photography, and select alternative processes such as cyanotype. Participants can use the residency for research, creative exploration, or project development while working independently in a focused studio environment.
Who Can Apply
This residency is open to individual creative professionals who:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have a demonstrated record of accomplishment
- Have a clearly defined photography project
- Have proven knowledge and experience working in an analogue darkroom
- Are comfortable working independently without technical or production support
Canadian and international applicants are welcome. Artists who have participated in a Leighton Studio residency within the past three years are no eligible.
Residency Details
Residencies are available for a minimum of 2 weeks and maximum of 6 weeks.
Available residency periods include:
- April 5 – June 18, 2027
- July 5 – December 10, 2027
- February 14 – March 31, 2028
Participants receive private use of the Crich Photography Studio, single-room accommodation, a meal plan, and access to Banff Centre campus facilities. Residents are responsible for bringing the materials, equipment, supplies, and chemicals required for their project.
Scholarships & Financial Assistance
Participants receive a Banff Centre Arts Scholarship that covers tuition and contributes toward accommodation, and meals. Additional named scholarships may also be available to eligible Canadian and international applicants.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- A two-page résumé
- A two-page project proposal
- 5–8 examples of previous or current work
- Examples demonstrating relevant darkroom skills
- Three preferred residency date options
- A list of materials, supplies, and chemicals required for the project
The application fee is $65, or $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.
