The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity's Leighton Artist Studio - Solo 27/28 offers individual creative professionals 2 to 6 weeks of focused, self-directed time in a private Leighton Studio.
Set in the forested surroundings of Banff Centre, the residency is designed to support research, creation, exploration, and project development. Participants manage their own time and work independently, making this opportunity best suited to artists who are comfortable working autonomously without production or technical support.
Who Can Apply
This residency is open to creative professionals with a demonstrated record of accomplishment and a clearly defined project.
Eligible disciplines include:
- Design
- Music composition and songwriting
- Theatre arts, including dramaturgy and playwriting
- Visual arts and curatorial research
- Literature, poetry, non-fiction, journalism, and scriptwriting
- Filmmaking and screenwriting
- Interdisciplinary projects
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Canadian and international applicants are welcome. Artists who have participated in a Leighton Studio residency within the past three years are not eligible.
Residency Details
Residencies are available for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks.
Available residency periods include:
- April 5 - June 18, 2027
- July 5 - December 10, 2027
- January 10 - March 31, 2028
Participants receive a private studio, single-room accommodation, a meal plan, and access to Banff Centre campus facilities. Applicants are responsible for bringing all materials, equipment, and supplies required for their project.
Scholarships & Financial Assistance
Participants receive a Banff Centre Arts Scholarship that covers tuition and contributes toward accommodation and meal costs.
Canadian Indigenous Arts applicants receive scholarship support covering 100% of tuition, accommodation, and meals. Additional Banff Centre scholarships may also be available to eligible Canadian and international applicants.

- A two-page résumé
- A two-page project proposal
- 5-8 examples of previous or current work
- Preferred residency dates
A non-refundable application fee of $65 applies, or $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.
