Explore the art of storytelling through song in Everyone Has a Story, a free two-day songwriting workshop led by Alberta’s Artist-in-Residence, John Wort Hannam. An award-winning songwriter celebrated for his thoughtful lyrics and narrative-driven songs, John will guide participants through the creative process of songwriting—from generating ideas to crafting a completed lyrical composition.
Focused on personal storytelling and self-expression, this workshop invites participants to reflect on their own lived experiences and transform them into original song lyrics. Through creative prompts, writing exercises, and group discussion, participants will uncover the stories only they can tell. No musical experience is required, and participants do not need to sing or play an instrument—this workshop focuses on the lyrical and storytelling aspects of songwriting.
At the heart of the workshop is the belief that sharing stories helps build understanding, empathy, and stronger communities. By listening to one another’s experiences and perspectives, participants will explore how creativity can foster meaningful connection across diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Participants are encouraged to bring loose leaf paper or a notebook, pens or pencils, a water bottle, and snacks. Optional materials such as journals, photographs, or a thesaurus may also help inspire ideas and storytelling throughout the workshop.
Whether you are an experienced writer or completely new to creative writing, this welcoming workshop offers a supportive space to explore memory, creativity, and connection through song.
