Olive Wooden

Literary Arts (Short Story)

This short story was created based on conversations with Olive Wooden as part of the Art of Conversation initiative, sponsored by Arts Council Wood Buffalo and St. Aidan’s Society. The character of Olive is based on Olive Wooden, along with relayed details of the Duck Inn she operated in the hamlet of Anzac over the course of a decade. In the fall of 2001, a team of workers did stay at her inn to build a church in Anzac. The other characters, however, are fictional. They are composites of characters and themes of Olive’s favourite work of fiction, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, and of many personalities that enjoyed the hospitality of the Duck Inn over the years.
