Writer in Residence

The Airdrie Public Library is accepting submissions of interest for this year’s APL Writer in Residence. The position entails a four-week engagement in the fall of 2022, working with the public and supporting emerging and established writers in any genre or form of writing. A 40-hour commitment is expected of the successful applicant.

The writer in residence will receive a $3,000 honorarium.

The writer in residence will provide one-on-one consultations and will offer manuscript readings, blue pencil critiques and publishing process advice. In addition, they will deliver four public speaking events including one reading of their work.

We are anticipating this program will be offered in person at the library, but the successful candidate may be required to work remotely, with some or all activities being offered online.

Application deadline: 5:00pm., September 9, 2022.

Applicants must:

  • Have a solid publication history and an established reputation as a professional writer.
  • Be experienced in teaching and leading writing workshops.
  • Be able to critique a variety of writing styles and genres.
  • Be able to handle public speaking, work with groups, and work one-on-one.
  • Be available to undertake the engagement in November 2022.

Culture in Your Community – Postcard Competition

In 2021, Calgary’s Loft 112 spearheaded an amazing project called Cards for Community.

Using this as inspiration, Parkland Poets’ Society is launching a province-wide Postcard Project showcasing culture in our very own Alberta communities.

What we are looking for:

A physical OR digital 4×6 postcard sharing some combination of words and images and showcasing culture in your community.

What the completed project will look like:

An art installation/gallery-exhibit-type display that will be a visual representation of what “Culture in Your Community” means to Albertans. The display will be unveiled in a public event being hosted in the Stony Plain Public Library on Saturday, Sept 24, 2022.

Why?

To link Albertans together in a tapestry of words and images.

How do I enter?

Submissions accepted June 1st to August 31st, 2022.

Playfest 2022: Call for Performers

Theatre; Just Because is thrilled to announce PlayFest, a one-day performing arts festival happening in Fort McMurray!

Taking place on August 27, 2022, PlayFest celebrates local artists and performers with two events: Play in the Park and Play After Dark.

Play in the Park is an outdoor, family-friendly event in a local park (Location TBA). This daytime event will include interactive activities, theatre and arts-based performances, and more! Play in the Park is entirely free to attend. 

Play After Dark is an evening cabaret geared towards ages 16 and over. Play After Dark will take place in the amphitheatre at Centerfire Place and is pay-what-you-can admission, with proceeds going towards future programming at Theatre; Just Because. 

PlayFest encapsulates our mission at Theatre; Just Because by creating opportunities for local performance artists to do just that – perform!” says Artistic Director Bailey Yarkie. “We hope to bring together a day of diverse performances and celebrate the arts in our region.”

Open Call to ALL Local Artists – Wood Buffalo Volunteer Rewards 2022

Wood Buffalo Volunteer Rewards (previously known as Timeraiser) is an innovative volunteer rewards system that celebrates the incredible acts of kindness volunteers give to our community. The program works by allowing local volunteers the opportunity to exchange their time spent volunteering for rewards such as local art, goods, experiences, and services. The program features a variety of rewards to ensure that there is something for everyone and makes a conscious effort to purchase rewards that will elevate our region’s rich culture, talent, and small businesses. Anyone that volunteers at a local social profit or community-based organization can participate! It is our goal through this program to thank volunteers for their contributions and strengthen the social profit sector; all while supporting local artists and small businesses.

FuseSocial is thrilled to announce that the 2022 Call for Artists is now open. Our call will be open to all forms of art (music, theatre, culinary, etc.). The call is furthermore extended to be inclusive of experiences that do not expire (theatre tickets, photography session, lessons, etc.). Please see the full artist call HERE!

Submission Requirements for Wood Buffalo Volunteer Rewards

Please read carefully

  • Applicants must be residents of Wood Buffalo
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age and older
  • Maximum three (3) pieces entered per artist may be submitted for consideration
  • All pieces must be recent; created within the last 2 years (2020+)
  • Works must be made independently, without guidance or instruction (Artworks made during a workshop or class are not eligible)
  • All pieces must be original; no copies or prints permitted
  • The artwork provided is the original artwork and is the sole intellectual property of the artist, with no copyright infringements. Please refer to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office website link for clarification on copyright: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf/eng/h_wr00003.html

Further Requirements:

  • All artworks must be ready to hang (wire setting 1/3 from the top of the artwork, no saw tooth hangers)
  • All pieces must be framed and signed (stretched canvas must have finished painted edges, no staples showing and artwork on various papers must be in a frame with glass front)
  • Artist sets the price of their submission and price must include framing and any/all expenses required to deliver the submission. It should also include any taxes (up to a maximum of $1,500)
  • Any type of experience (tickets, lessons, culinary, etc.) submitted must not have an expiration date

Artist Labels

  • Develop two (2) Artist Labels that identify your piece
  • Include artist/artwork information: Your name as you would like it to appear, the title of your work, the medium (example: Oil on Canvas, Mixed Media, Photography, etc.) and the dimensions (in inches). Affix one (1) label to the back of your artwork and bring one (1) additional label with you when you drop off your artwork
  • Include detailed information about what is included in your submission. For example, for a culinary arts submission – receive dinner prepared on site and at a location of your choosing for a maximum of 20 guests. Please be as detailed as possible

Selection Process

  • Art will be selected by a non-exhibiting jury consisting of representatives from FuseSocial, Arts Council Wood Buffalo, and member(s) of the Wood Buffalo community. There is no guarantee that all submitted artwork will be chosen
  • Selected artists will be notified via email by July 31, 2022
  • Successful entries are to be dropped off to FuseSocial at 20 Riedel Street (dates to be announced)
  • Artists are responsible for making the arrangements to drop-off their artwork at the designated time and space
  • Successful submissions will be displayed on www.wbvolunteerrewards.ca

Residential Schools Memorial

Indigenous artists can submit a proposal for a memorial on legislature grounds to honour residential school students who never came home.

Overview

On June 25, 2021, the Alberta government announced it would work with Indigenous communities to establish a permanent memorial on the Alberta legislature grounds for the victims of the residential school system.

The Residential Schools Memorial Advisory Panel was established to develop a vision for the memorial with consultation from Indigenous communities, review eligible artist submissions and recommend an artist to create the memorial.

The Residential Schools Memorial Request for Expressions of Interest is open to all Indigenous artists who live in or are from Alberta.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #82 calls “upon provincial and territorial governments, in collaboration with Survivors and their organizations, and other parties to the Settlement Agreement, to commission and install a publicly accessible, highly visible, Residential Schools Memorial in each capital city to honour Survivors and all the children who were lost to their families and communities.”

On September 30, 2021, the Alberta government and Indigenous leaders planted a tree on the legislature grounds to represent growth, continuity, renewal and life. A reconciliation garden will also be planted on the site. The Government of Alberta is now welcoming Expressions of Interest for a permanent memorial on the site.

Funding

Up to $1 million.

Eligible applicants

This Request for an Expression of Interest is open to the following categories of Indigenous artists from or living in Alberta:

  • individual artist
  • artist-led teams
  • artist collectives
  • partnerships of artists

Recent familial connections to Alberta First Nations or with the Metis Settlements and Métis Nation Regions are required.

Artists are defined as individuals who:

  • are actively pursuing a career in the arts
  • have invested in the development of their artistic skills, voice and goals
  • may have formal training
  • may have shared their work publicly
  • may have been compensated for their work, and
  • may have a relationship with their artistic communities and peers

Artists do not need to be working professionally in the arts full-time. Artists may also include individuals working in craft, design industries or architecture.

Eligible proposals

Eligible proposals must:

  • include a Letter of Interest for the proposed concept
  • include a resume/CV/biography(ies) in the application
  • demonstrate experience and ability to manage and deliver the scope of work proposed
  • include examples of public artwork with a clear demonstration of how the final project will be delivered with pictures/images
  • include a rendering or image to support the proposed concept attached
  • demonstrate a meaning/impression/story of how the proposal reflects the history of residential schools in Alberta
  • include a connection to Indigenous communities in Alberta

The panel will only consider proposals that meet these submission requirements.

Apply to be Alberta’s Artist in Residence/Arts Ambassador

Alberta-based artists can apply to become the government’s next resident artist to promote art and artists across the province.

This program seeks to inspire innovation in the arts and to promote a wider understanding and appreciation of the arts and artists in Alberta.

Artists are encouraged to apply for this grant to become Alberta’s Artist in Residence / Arts Ambassador for a one-year term.

Through this grant, the successful artist will:

  • work with communities across Alberta as an Arts Ambassador to promote the importance of Alberta artists and the arts
  • communicate and share personal perspectives on the artistic process, the role of artists, and the contributions that artists make to Alberta
  • act as an advocate for greater understanding of the realities of artists and the communities in which they work
  • complete an art project that promotes the value of the arts in Alberta

Applications from all artists are encouraged, including artists from the following communities:

  • Indigenous artists
  • artists from culturally diverse communities*
  • Deaf artists and artists with disabilities
  • Francophone artists
  • 2SLGBTQQIA+ artists**
  • new generation artists, emerging artists and youth

*Culturally diverse communities are defined as racialized groups that correspond to “visible minorities” under the federal Employment Equity Act. These are individuals of African, Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern or mixed ancestral heritage that includes at least one of these groups.

**Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning, Intersexual, Asexual, plus.

Eligibility

The Artist in Residence is selected annually through a competitive project grant application process.

This annual opportunity is open to all artists who are residents of Alberta that practice any artistic discipline(s) including, but may not be limited to:

  • dance
  • film and video
  • Indigenous arts
  • literary arts
  • music
  • theatre
  • visual arts and new media

Assessment

Applications are assessed by a panel of adjudicators with expertise in the arts sector in Alberta.

Assessment of an application will consider:

  • the proposed project
  • the ability and suitability of the candidate to act as an Arts Ambassador for Alberta

The successful grant recipient is selected by the Minister of Culture and Status of Women, whose decision is final. The selection of artists from year to year will be deliberate to reflect the cultural richness of diverse communities across the province. Funding is not assured for any project.

Project development

The program provides one-time funding assistance for the recipient to develop an artistic project that promotes the value of the arts in Alberta.

The artist is required to document and provide access to an inside look of their artistic creative process for the proposed project. The artist should clearly describe the purpose and intended outcomes of each activity, and how this work would be documented. All travel expenses will be the responsibility of the artist.

Community outreach

The artist is expected to be accessible to community organizations that may wish to invite the artist to attend a community event or to meet with stakeholders. In these cases, interested organizations must apply to host the artist through the Alberta Artist in Residence/Arts Ambassador website.

The artist is expected to provide to provide content to share over a specialized social media (Instagram) account, owned and managed by the Government of Alberta.

Government interaction

The Alberta Artist in Residence/Arts Ambassador is also a ceremonial position, and the recipient is expected to attend and bring greetings (as appropriate) for up to 6 government events at the minister’s request during the term of the residency. Event invites are at the minister’s discretion; however, it is anticipated the artist will be expected to attend events during:

  • Month of the Artist
  • Alberta Culture Days

The selected artist will also have an opportunity to meet with the Minister of Culture and Status of Women, as well as other government officials to provide their perspective on the value of the arts and artists in Alberta.

Call for Submissions: National Queer & Trans Playwriting Unit

UNIT DURATION: OCTOBER 2022-JULY 2023

WORKSHOPS & PUBLIC READINGS OF PLAYS: SEPTEMBER 2023

Zee Zee Theatre is leading a consortium of ten national producing companies searching for five playwrights working towards their best and most ambitious work to date for this first ever, entirely 2SLGBTQQIA+, virtual playwriting unit resulting in a canon of new Canadian intersectional plays being developed for production.

Reliable internet and Zoom access are essential for this initiative. If this poses a concern please bring it to our attention and we will work to connect you to a local organization that can host the meetings.

The consortium is made up of ​​Gwaandak Theatre (Whitehorse), Zee Zee Theatre (Vancouver), the frank theatre (Vancouver),  Theatre Outre (Lethbridge), Persephone Theatre (Saskatoon), Theatre Projects Manitoba (Winnipeg), Native Earth Performing Arts (Toronto), Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (Toronto), Imago Theatre (Montreal), Neptune Theatre (Halifax). Learn more about the consortium partners here.

Each playwright will work in collaboration with a dedicated dramaturg identified from their own needs assessment. They will meet weekly alternating between their dramaturg and the full unit, thereby offering each other collegial insights and support. 

The unique length and depth of the program as well as a significant financial investment allows the playwright to manage the trajectory of their play with committed and long-term dramaturgical, administrative, and communication support from the consortium as well as a commitment by the individual companies that each one of the five plays created will be picked up for brief additional development and ultimate path to production in a future season.

Over the course of the ten months, you will have opportunities to engage with each of the ten companies, having access to the artistic leadership as well as being asked to provide one Community Offering (workshop, artist talk, reading) per month to one of the companies via Zoom. 

At the end of each month during the unit there will be an Open House artist discussion with the full unit and their dramaturgs welcoming in audiences and stakeholders to look back on the month’s work. 

The program provides: 

  • $2,000/month for the 10 months of the unit, 
  • Dramaturgical support,
  • One week workshop with a cast of actors and director, 
  • Hybrid public reading of the play in person (as public health orders allow) with stakeholders Zooming in from other cities, 
  • A consortium of theatre makers developing their networks, creative practices, and projects in conversation with each other, to provide a more comprehensive support and feedback network than any one individual as well as deep connections to ten producing companies and their audiences across the country.

The deadline to apply for the program is July 5, 2022. 

Who should apply?

Emerging and mid-career writers with a specific project in mind. 

Zee Zee Theatre is based in on the traditional, unceded, and occupied territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, but locations of the workshops and readings will be in various other cities determined by the eventual makeup of the unit. 

Participants must be permanent residents of Canada. 

Zee Zee Theatre is continuously working to make all our programs accessible. We encourage writers with a lived experience of disability to apply for all of our programs. We are also an equity-seeking company, with a history of working with artists from numerous communities. We are dedicated to creating spaces within which Indigenous, Black, people of colour, 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, and people with intersectional identity perspectives can lead and create. Flexible timing, virtual sessions, attention to time of day and duration of work can all be designed with the artist to maximize creative satisfaction. 

All artists, contractors, staff and volunteers must adhere to Zee Zee’s Community Guidelines.

The Unit is led by Vancouver’s Playwrights Theatre Centre’s Dramaturg, Creative Engagement, Joanna Garfinkel, and each of the five participating playwrights will be matched with one dramaturg to work with for the duration of the ten month unit.

  • What are your most compelling questions right now as a playwright? 
  • What current and ongoing commitments and obligations do you have?

2. A pitch detailing your specific project: Either a short (500 word) description or a 5 minute maximum video submission of the idea that you want to focus on during the Unit. Include any co-producing relationships, community or peer collaborations in place, or previous development history if applicable. Commissions from or for other companies are not eligible. 

3. A recent, completed, full-length work, play, performance, installation, documentary, that you feel represents you as an artist and can demonstrate a history of completion. 

4. Your theatre resume/CV.

Call for Submissions – RISE Emerging Artist Program 2023

RISE is an annual exhibition and mentorship program developed by artsPlace to offer Alberta artists the opportunity to educate, exhibit, sell, and promote their artistic practice within the Bow Valley.

The goal of RISE is to cultivate Alberta’s emerging artists by pairing an exhibition opportunity with mentorship by a local art professional. Participating artists build experience in exhibition design, installation and professional practice. RISE fosters a strong community awareness of contemporary arts practices and prepares new-generation artists for a professional career in the arts.

Eligibility:

An emerging artist is defined as: someone who is in the early stage of their career (less than 5 years), has specialized training in their field (not necessarily gained in an academic institution), and who has created a modest independent body of work.

Emerging artists may include students, recently graduated students from a post-secondary institution, or someone who has made a recent career change or decision to prioritize their art practice. The artist cannot be exhibiting work with a commercial gallery, and MUST be resident of Alberta for at least a year prior to the application deadline date.

Calls for submission are open to ALL visual art disciplines, and applicants may apply as an individual or as part of a collective of artists.

Arts in Action: Call for Young Artists (Ages 16-24)

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Arts in Action program provides opportunities for Seniors to engage in the arts through activity-based workshops with Teaching Artists. Young Artists (aged 16-24) will be mentored by Teaching Artists, through the development of a workshop series, as a way of building youth capacity and educating them on the value Seniors and Elders bring to our community. The Young Artist will support the Teaching Artist to host three workshops, over the course of four weeks, specific to a particular artform (i.e.: Garage Band Workshop Series, Improv Workshop Series, Watercolour Workshop Series, etc). Arts Council invites Young Artists of varying disciplines to submit proposals through our online Opportunities Portal detailing experience they have in their artform, and why they would be interested in this paid mentorship opportunity.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Artist must reside in the Wood Buffalo Region
  • Artist must between the ages of 16-24
  • Artist must have some experience creating art within a particular artform

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • Arts Council is interested in finding a young artist who has a true passion for the arts and a willingness to learn and be mentored by an artist
  • The young artist must be comfortable engaging with Seniors or Elders in a workshop format, as well as working with them to create new art pieces that will be produced in the workshop
  • The young artist must be able to support the Teaching Artist in facilitating their workshop, as needed, to ensure workshops are conducted at the highest possible standard.
  • Arts Council will be inviting Artists to submit calls for workshops that will take place within two different “seasons”:
    • Summer/Fall 2023: Workshops will run between July 17, 2023 and October 31, 2023
    • Winter 2023-24: November 2023 – March 2024

WORK MEDIA

The work media must be teachable and engaging to Seniors or Elders. Teaching Artforms may include, but are not limited to:

SELECTION PROCESS

The Young Artists (16-24) will be selected based on their experience in their artform, their willingness to learn from another artist and participate and engage in workshops with Seniors. Past experience working with Seniors or Elders, would be considered an asset.

Selections will be made by Arts Council Wood Buffalo staff. All selections will be final, all successful artists will be notified by June 16th, 2023.

Calling All Artists – 90 for $90 Fundraiser

Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) invites local artists to create an original piece of artwork as a donation to support the production of the Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards, aka, the Buffys. ACWB will provide 8” square cradled birch panels for the artist to create on. The art can be any 2D or relief media that fits on the panel.

The completed art pieces will be displayed publicly, online, and at a Buffys-themed event occurring during the weekend of October 14-16, 2022. Artwork will be available for purchase at the live events as well as online, with all proceeds supporting the Buffys.

ACWB relies on fundraising to execute the Buffys. This celebration of the arts in our region is a popular event offering various networking and showcase opportunities to artists of all disciplines.

ACWB appreciates the support of local artists and the opportunity to celebrate the arts community through the annual Buffys presentation.

The Nitty Gritty

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

1. Claim your panel – Email us with your name, and address so we can arrange a pick-up location. (Some delivery options are available.) Email to: fundraiser@artscouncilwb.ca

2. Pick-up your panel – Once you receive an email from us, pick-up your panel and get started!

3. Complete your panel – Once you have finished, contact us to drop off your panel. (Some pickup options are available.) Make sure you provide us with your preferred social media, website, and contact information so we can promote your artwork!

FAQ’s

1. Does it have to be a painting? – No, use your creativity and use your panel how you wish. Take the opportunity to show us what you’ve got!

2. Is there a theme? – No, this is all about your choices as an artist.

3. Does it need to be wired? – Unless you have a very specific hanging method for your creation, you are not required to wire it.

4. When do you need the panels back? – Completed panels must be returned by August 25.

5. Can I create more than one panel? – Maximum panel pick up is two per artist. When those completed ones are returned, you may pick up more panels if there are still some available.

6. What’s in it for me? – Current Members will be given a 1-year extension on their membership and non-member artists will receive a complimentary 1-year membership. ACWB will be promoting the participating artists and artwork throughout the fundraiser.

6. Where will the sale take place? – Artwork will be available online through ACWB Marketplace and featured at a Buffys-themed event in October.

7. How will this support the Buffys? – Panels will be sold for $90 each with 100% of the profits benefitting ACWB’s annual Buffys!

Arts in Action: Call for Teaching Artists

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Arts in Action program provides opportunities for Seniors to engage in the arts through activity-based workshops with Teaching Artists. The Teaching Artists will also mentor young artists (aged 16-24) through the development of their workshop series, as a way of building youth capacity and educating them on the value Seniors and Elders bring to our community. The Teaching Artist will host three workshops, over the course of four weeks, specific to a particular artform (i.e.: Garage Band Workshop Series, Improv Workshop Series, Watercolour Workshop Series, etc). Arts Council invites Teaching Artists of varying disciplines to submit proposals through our online Opportunities Portal detailing their artform and how it can be turned into a workshop series.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Artist must reside in the Wood Buffalo Region
  • Artist must be able to turn their artform into a teachable workshop geared towards Seniors and Elders
  • Artist must be experienced in their artform and be able to provide samples of previous experience
  • Must have a reasonable and affordable budget for their proposed workshop

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • Arts Council is particularly interested in workshops that will engage Seniors or Elders in their workshop, creating a experience that will impact Seniors or Elders lives
  • If the opportunity presents itself, the Teaching Artist will be open to mentoring a Young Artist (16-24) and integrating them into their workshop plan. 
  • The Teaching Artist will be responsible for organising two 3-4 hour workshops with the same Seniors or Elders registered to attend each. This means that participants may continue to work on the same projects over the course of several weeks, taking the projects home, and bringing them back to the next session, if that suits the Teaching Artists workshop plan.
  • The proposed workshop should support between 10-20 Seniors or Elder participants. Maximum numbers will be decided in consultation with the successful Teaching Artist candidates. 
  • Arts Council will be inviting Artists to submit calls for workshops that will take place within two different “seasons”:
    • Summer/Fall 2023: Workshops will run between July 17, 2023 and October 31, 2023
    • Winter 2023-24: November 2023 – March 2024

WORK MEDIA

The work media must be teachable and engaging to Seniors or Elders. Teaching Artforms may include, but are not limited to:

  • Painting
  • Drumming
  • Theatre
  • Beading

  • Macrame

Consideration of how they would involve mentoring a Young Artist would be an asset.

Buffys 2022 — Call for Makeup Artist/Face Painter

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (Buffys) is an annual program that recognizes and celebrates excellence in various areas of the arts throughout our region. The program also builds awareness of the incredible contribution artists make to Wood Buffalo. In the past, Arts Council has commissioned illustrators to create promotional assets for the Buffys. With this year’s showcase being a live event, Arts Council is looking to hire makeup/face painting artists to create “live-action” photographic assets to parallel this change. 

Arts Council aims to hire an artist who will create 12 individual looks, painted on model’s faces, to represent 12 award categories for a promotional photoshoot prior to the Buffys event. The completed assets will be used in this year’s programs, posters, on social media, and in video elements at the event. The photoshoot will take place the week of April 24th, 2022, and the amount of time required to complete the project will be determined in collaboration with the artists involved and Arts Council.

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • ACWB seeks to select one Wood Buffalo artist to create twelve (12) looks, interpreting (either literally or figuratively) each of the following categories: 
  1. Arts Administration
  2. Arts Education
  3. Creative Collaboration
  4. Ken Flaherty Music Award
  5. Dance
  6. Performing Arts
  7. Indigenous Arts
  8. Visual Arts
  9. Fine Craft
  10. Literary Arts
  11. Media Arts
  12. Rising Star
  • Hired artist will report to Arts Council Wood Buffalo Programs Coordinator Hanna Fridhed.
  • Artist will work with a photographer recruited and compensated by Arts Council to capture each look.
  • Artist will be responsible for designing each look and applying makeup/facepaint inspired by this year’s theme: Future Midnight and the 12 award categories.
  • Artist must supply their own tools and products.
  • The photoshoot takes place the week of April 24th, 2022.

All final submissions must be 100% original, royalty-free and free from risk of being flagged for copyright violations.
