Buffys 2021 — Call for Performing Artists

Wood Buffalo Excellence in the Arts Awards

The Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (Buffys) is an annual program that recognizes and celebrates excellence in various areas of the arts throughout our region. The program also builds awareness of the incredible contribution artists make to Wood Buffalo. Following the success of 2020, this year’s showcase continues to be a cinematic experience, which will include pre-recorded elements to be broadcast online on October 16, 2021. Arts Council aims to commission performances that will be pre-recorded for the premiere of this year’s broadcast. See last year’s Buffys presentation here: https://youtu.be/6KLIwmgNiZc.

Please peruse the Government of Alberta’s Performing Arts Guidelines HERE prior to submitting.

  • Artists must be Wood Buffalo residents for the duration of the project
  • Performance must not exceed 5 minutes in length
  • Artists must be performance-ready for recording by mid-June
  • Performance must not have been, or have plans to be presented again in close proximity of the Buffys (i.e. no repeat presentations of the Work between July and December 2021).

The work must be visually appealing to present on film, and may include, but is not limited to:

  • Short-films
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Theatre
  • Comedy
  • Spoken Word
  • Circus Arts
  • 2D or 3D artforms

  • The Buffys are a great place to be experimental and try things out, so we encourage artists to embrace their unique ideas and dream something up that fits “outside-the-box.”
  • Submissions that deviate from this year’s theme (Midnight in Technicolor) will be prioritized. The performances must be self-contained pieces and are an opportunity for the audience to visually break away from the Buffys theme during the broadcast.
  • Considerations for COVID-safety must be evident within the submission. (i.e., is it possible to create this piece with social distancing measures in place?)
  • The performance will be recorded with a professional videographer commissioned and compensated by ACWB. Artists will realize their vision by collaborating with others, including videographers, project managers, and performers.
  • Each submission must have a designated director, who will manage the vision of the project as well as its performers. They will act as the point-contact for the project and will arrange for a preview performance of the piece to be made available to the videographer ahead of time. This can be an in-person rehearsal, or a draft recording of the performance sent digitally. This director may also be required to sit in on meetings to plan creative and logistical aspects of the performance in advance with our creative team.
  • All final submissions must be 100% original, royalty-free and free from risk of being flagged for copyright violations.

Please fill out the following form by May 18: https://forms.gle/75Xn7NpceaanofD87

We ask artists to present their Fee for Service to us as part of their submission (see above).

Artists will be selected based on appropriateness for the program, cost, and quality. Priority will be given to artists who community clear, detailed concepts, with reasoning and feasibility provided to support their selected performance location.

Please note that only artists(s) who are successful will be notified.
