Advisor, Design and Multimedia

Position Type/ Hours:

This is a temporary full-time position working seventy (70) hours bi-weekly for approximately one (1) year within the Strategic Communications Branch of the Communications and Engagement Department. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.

Position Description:

Under general supervision, works with all municipal departments to lead the production of internal and external design and multimedia projects in accordance with municipal brand standards and accepted design elements. This position also requires close interaction with all members of the department to ensure that work requests are delegated and completed promptly and accurately.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Designs and delivers creative concepts.
Schedules and completes briefing meetings and obtains required reference and resource materials to assist in completion of design collateral.
Produces finished print layouts for municipal communication materials such as public notices, open house advertisements, pamphlets, posters, brochures and internal publications.
Through the use of photography, contributes to, and aids in, maintenance of municipal photo and graphic library.
When directed, produces, films, and edits video/film/animation material for the various media outlets used by the municipality.
Prepares storyboards, as needed, supporting written content.
Follows up periodically with department clients to determine service and quality satisfaction levels.
Secures required sign-off on product created.
Uses design skills, HTML and CSS to manipulate web pages and govern their styling.
Provides web page edits to facilitate effective content and image layouts.
Approves submitted website content by making design and layout edits, evaluates and decides on the logical placement of text and pictures, and reviews text for minor errors or omissions.
Considers overall website aesthetics, information accessibility, and creating additional navigational links and graphic elements.
Ensures website design and formatting standards are followed.
Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Two (2) year diploma in Graphic Arts or Graphic Design is required.
Three (3) years’ experience in graphic design required.
Strong portfolio demonstrating current understanding of graphic design trends and fonts.
Demonstrated experience building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience coordinating production efforts to ensure top quality results with a variety of vendors.
Experience in production of graphics for web environment using relevant software.
Understanding of HTML, CSS, general web standards, and photography/video camera and lighting techniques.
Public sector experience is an asset.

You will possess the following:

Proficient with entire Adobe Creative Suite CS3 or greater.
Demonstrated organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
Proven ability to follow standards, yet is creative and flexible in a team environment.
High enthusiasm for field of graphic and new media design.
Ability to work to both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced environment.
Demonstrated practice of pre-press and printer liaison.
General understanding of photography, ability to direct photo shoots as needed to increase collateral of municipal photo library.
High enthusiasm for field of graphic design.
Excellent ability to acquire knowledge by interviewing subject matter experts, learn new skills quickly, and work effectively as part of a team, but independently when required.
Excellent organizational skills with an ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with co-workers, elected officials and the public.
Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and competently operate camera equipment, both still and video.

PL 9

Salary Range:

$42.65 (Temporary Rate)                                                                                                                    

In addition to the rate of pay, we offer: an additional bi-weekly payment of $480 which represents a cost of living allowance
