RBC Emerging Artist Project

Alberta Playwrights’ Network is now acceptation submissions for the 2020 RBC Emerging Artists Mentorship Program.

Through the generous support of the RBC Foundation, Alberta Playwrights’ Network is able to continue offering the RBC Emerging Artists Mentorship Program, designed to provide individual and project development to emerging and mid-career playwrights, through mentorship from our roster of professional playwrights.

Program Details
Selected participants must come with a play or a concept for a play they wish to work on throughout the program. Participants are selected by the Mentorship Committee and APN staff. There are 10 available spots (5 in Calgary & 5 in Edmonton), and residents from other communities within Alberta are encouraged to apply as well.

Once selected, participants will be matched with a mentor. Past mentors have included Meg Braem, Marty Chan, Conni Massing, Mieko Ouchi, Gordon Pengilly, Sharon Pollock, Clem Martini, David van Belle, Beth Graham, Karen Hines, Caroline Russell-King, & Collin Doyle.

The program will run from February to July 2020, with a minimum of 8 meetings between mentors and participants in that time. Due to the variety of individual schedules, mentors and participants will decide their own schedule of meetings. There will also be two group meetings and one professional development event in each city. Participants are expected to attend these meetings and events.

The program will culminate in a public presentation of excerpts from the plays crafted by the participants. The fee for the program is 300.00, which helps to cover space rental, administrative costs, and other program expenses.

Interested applicants should make note of the following dates. These are intended to provide a rough timeline of the program and subject to change:
Introductory meeting – The week of February 16, 2020
Midterm meeting – Weekend of May 2/3, 2020
Professional development session – Weekend of June 27/28, 2020 OR July 4/5, 2020
Final presentations – July 25, 2020 OR August 1, 2020

NEXTFEST 2020: Call for the Syncrude Fort McMurray Artist Program

With generous support from Syncrude, The Nextfest Arts Company is pleased to announce the call for submission for the Syncrude Fort McMurray Artist Program for Nextfest 2020.

The Syncrude Fort McMurray Artist Program will support two emerging artists from Fort McMurry by bringing them to Edmonton to collaborate, network, learn and celebrate with other Albertan emerging artists at Nextfest, June 4, 2020 to June 14, 2020.

“Nextfest was such an incredible festival to be a part of. Having the opportunity to share my work, take in the work of others and network with other artists from Alberta and beyond has been a priceless experience. I am so grateful for the Syncrude Artist program, as, without the financial support, I would not have been able to make it to Nextfest at all, let alone for the whole duration of the festival! The Nextfest team have become like family to me, taking such great care of us in a city that I am largely unfamiliar with. The connections that I made with other artists here will certainly come in to play in my future work. I am inspired, enlightened and endlessly grateful for this wonderful opportunity. Thank you so much for providing an opportunity for Fort McMurray artists, and helping us thrive both within our own community and outside of the box.” – Ashley Laurenson, Nextfest 2019 Artist

Emerging artists of all mediums are encouraged to apply. We will do our best to provide an opportunity through one of our programs to present the work of artists who apply to participate. Please include a project brief in your application.

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Round trip airfare to Edmonton from Fort McMurray
  • Board for the duration of the festival (up to ten nights)
  • An exclusive Nextfest Artist Pass which includes: free entry to every event during Nextfest, access to all artist only events in the festival, and access to all festival workshops
  • A Nextfest T-shirt
  • The opportunity to meet, mix, and mingle with over six hundred emerging artists from Alberta

Applicants must be:

  • An emerging artist of any discipline
  • Available to attend Nextfest in Edmonton June 4, 2020 to June 14, 2020 (it is not necessary that applicants come for the entire duration of the festival, though it is encouraged)
  • Under 30 years of age
  • A resident of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo area for at least one year

To apply please send:

  • A letter of interest
  • A project proposal in ANY format
  • An artist’s bio and resume (CV)
  • A sample of your work in ANY format

Applications are to be submitted to Ellen Chorley, Festival Director, at [email protected] no later than February 1, 2020 at 11:59 pm.
