Buffys 2021 — Call for Performing Artists

Wood Buffalo Excellence in the Arts Awards

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards (Buffys) is an annual program that recognizes and celebrates excellence in various areas of the arts throughout our region. The program also builds awareness of the incredible contribution artists make to Wood Buffalo. Following the success of 2020, this year’s showcase continues to be a cinematic experience, which will include pre-recorded elements to be broadcast online on October 16, 2021. Arts Council aims to commission performances that will be pre-recorded for the premiere of this year’s broadcast. See last year’s Buffys presentation here: https://youtu.be/6KLIwmgNiZc

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Artists must be Wood Buffalo residents for the duration of the project
  • Performance must not exceed 5 minutes in length
  • Artists must be performance-ready for recording by mid-June
  • Performance must not have been, or have plans to be presented again in close proximity of the Buffys (i.e. no repeat presentations of the Work between July and December 2021).

WORK MEDIA:
The work must be visually appealing to present on film, and may include, but is not limited to:

  • Short-films
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Theatre
  • Comedy
  • Spoken Word
  • Circus Arts
  • 2D or 3D artforms

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

  • The Buffys are a great place to be experimental and try things out, so we encourage artists to embrace their unique ideas and dream something up that fits “outside-the-box.”
  • Submissions that deviate from this year’s theme (Midnight in Technicolor) will be prioritized. The performances must be self-contained pieces and are an opportunity for the audience to visually break away from the Buffys theme during the broadcast.
  • Considerations for COVID-safety must be evident within the submission. (i.e., is it possible to create this piece with social distancing measures in place?)
  • The performance will be recorded with a professional videographer commissioned and compensated by ACWB. Artists will realize their vision by collaborating with others, including videographers, project managers, and performers.
  • Each submission must have a designated director, who will manage the vision of the project as well as its performers. They will act as the point-contact for the project and will arrange for a preview performance of the piece to be made available to the videographer ahead of time. This can be an in-person rehearsal, or a draft recording of the performance sent digitally. This director may also be required to sit in on meetings to plan creative and logistical aspects of the performance in advance with our creative team.
  • All final submissions must be 100% original, royalty-free and free from risk of being flagged for copyright violations.

ACWB 2020 Annual Report Cover Artwork

Project Description

Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) is looking for local 2D or 3D visual artists, illustrators, photographers, graphic designers, printmakers or painters to submit artwork for their 2020 Annual Report cover. The image will reflect the theme of “Growth.”

Our region has seen an incredible amount of change over the past few years, but “Growth” always follows change. In 2020, many artists focused on growth by finding new ways of performing through virtual platforms; other artists came together in new ways to create their art, while many adapted by focusing on professional development and growth as artists.

ACWB also focused on growth by expanding the team from three to nine staff members. While the Fort McMurray team began planting seeds for an Arts Incubator in the downtown area, two new Rural Arts Support Liaisons extended the branches of our arts network into Fort Chipewyan and Janvier.

The seeds planted in 2020 have begun to sprout. As we move into 2021 and beyond, the arts community continues to grow into a fertile garden of collaboration, community and creativity.

The image to be used on the cover of the Annual Report will be distributed during our AGM and available to all members, stakeholders and general community members. The image will also be used to promote the Annual Report on ACWB’s various online platforms.

Work Media

ACWB welcomes submissions from both established and emerging artists.

ACWB will not be purchasing the physical artwork, only the digital image. The artwork will be used as a background image, and under the discretion of  ACWB’s designer, creating the final Annual Report graphic design, which may be cropped or have information and design elements placed on top. We will request non-exclusive rights to the work and will accept existing and new artwork; however it should not have appeared in any other way in the Wood Buffalo community in the six months prior to submission, or be used on a mass scale for up to six months after the annual report is released.

Submitted digital files of photography, digital artwork or representations of any 2D or 3D artwork must be in the form of digital files, prepared and ready for print with the following requirements:

  • Digital artwork files must be uploaded in a jpg or png file format.
  • File size is no smaller than 8.5″ x 11″ and should be minimum 300dpi. The image may be cropped to fit printable surface area. Please ensure the digital file is cropped to show only your submitted image and no background elements (frame, etc.).
  • All artworks and elements within the artwork must be the sole intellectual property of the artist. If the artwork is digital media medium, design elements must have been purchased with the proper license to be used for both print and digital purposes, listed in the project description.

Entry Requirements

Maximum of 3 artwork submissions per artist. Please submit the following items in one email to [email protected] using the subject line: Annual Report Cover Submission. Some of the information provided below will be used to give credit to the successful artist in the Annual Report and in other promotions. Please make sure this information provided is correct, with proper grammar and punctuation.

Please refer to this checklist to ensure all submission elements are submitted for consideration:

  • Artist Statement explaining the relevance of the image to the theme.
  • Artist Bio (100 words maximum)
  • Image list from A – C, title of artwork, medium used. Example A) Title, Medium, B) Title, Medium, C) Title, Medium.
  • Print ready digital file, minimum 1MB and/or 300dpi resolution. Files should be named as follows: first name_last name.a.jpeg, first name_last name.b.jpeg, etc. ACWB will accept large files from a downloadable source such as dropbox.com and FTP service.

Art of Conversation – Call for Artists, Seniors & Elders

UPDATE (November 2, 2020): This opportunity is currently closed, but please return to this page for news and updates as there could be additional opportunities in 2021.

Calling Wood Buffalo Artists of all disciplines, as well as Seniors & Elders (+60 years of age): ACWB will be hiring Artists based on accepted applications until all opportunities are filled. Seniors and Elders are also welcome to register until all opportunities are filled.

We’re paying for Wood Buffalo Artists to create art with local Seniors & Elders.

View the virtual exhibit of artwork produced through Art of Conversation.

“The Art of Conversation” is a collaborative project by Arts Council Wood Buffalo and St. Aidan’s Society for Artists, Seniors and Elders in the Wood Buffalo region.

Arts Council is paying to commission Artists of various disciplines in the local community to engage in phone conversations with Wood Buffalo’s isolated Seniors and Elders. The Artists and (optionally) Seniors and Elders will then create new art inspired by the stories that are shared.

The phone call and Artists’ creation process will be documented to be shared through Arts Council communications, and the Artist’s completed pieces (e.g., song, short story, paintings, craft, and animation) will be shared with the Senior or Elder with whom the piece was created.

About the Commission

  • This is a paid opportunity. Artist Fee details are outlined below.
  • Artists will self-lead phone conversations with Seniors or Elders in the community.
  • Artists will self-document the conversations and art creation process in a format that is agreed upon with ACWB (e,g., video, written documentation, photographs, or other medium), which will then be sent to ACWB .
  • Artists will then create a new piece of art with the goal of sharing with the Seniors or Elders digitally (and potentially in person once the quarantine is over).
  • The artwork may be photographed, and/or used in advertising and promotions.
  • The original artwork becomes property of ACWB.

Eligibilities

Artists must be Wood Buffalo residents for the duration of the project.

Work Media

There are no limits on the type of media accepted for this artist call.  We encourage local Artists to think outside the box, and let us know how they envision the art form of their preference complementing the project.

Art forms may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Original music or song compositions
  • Video and interactive art
  • Short stories or poems
  • 2D or 3D artwork / fine craft
  • Comics
  • Digital art
Alexander Bai – Cherished Memories for senior Linda Matychuk

Finished Art Pieces

Completed art pieces and recorded videos need to be delivered to ACWB within 8 weeks from the first conversation between the Artist, Senior or Elder. This may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Artist Fee

An all inclusive fee of $400 per commission (including GST) will be paid to the Artist, covering all prep-time, conversations, creation of artwork, materials and supplies.

How to Submit for this Opportunity

Email your submissions to Programs Manager Luay Eljamal at [email protected], with the following information:

  1. Your name and contact phone number
  2. Description of your preferred art form and how you believe it will support the project (200 words max)
  3. Description of how you will choose to present your art form, and how it will be shared with ACWB (e.g., a poem printed and framed; a song performed on video or a music file, etc.)
  4. A list of accomplishments or CV
  5. Exactly three (3) digital samples of previous work

We’re also looking for Seniors & Elders (60+) to create art with local artists.

Seniors and Elders are Invited to Participate

We encourage any local Senior or Elder above the age of 60 years to register. Please inform and invite anyone you might know who would be interested in creating art from a distance or having stimulating conversation.

Seniors and Elders will receive an art supply kit (safely) through St. Aidan’s established meal-delivery program, should they also wish to create art in addition to conversing with a local Artist.

Deadline for submissions: ACWB will be hiring Artists based on accepted applications and accepting until all opportunities are filled. Seniors and Elders are also welcome to register until all opportunities are filled.
